Customs are still very important in Berchtesgaden. Traditions are preserved & lived on through numerous club activities. All year round, you can experience numerous festivals, celebrations & parades & follow genuine bavarian customs. Thanks to the resort´s location, it is also possible to gain an insight into austrian culture & is definitely worth an experience.
MAIBAUM AUFSTELLEN
(May 1, 2025)
„Hauruck“ is the motto on May 1, when the maypole is erected in the various communities in & around Berchtesgaden. Traditionally, the tree is usually cut down the day before & kept safe. Because without a maypole guard, one or other of the trees would often no longer be in the same place on the day of the maypole erection as it was the evening before. The maypole symbolizes the cohesion of the individual communities & is the focal point of the festival on 1 May. Every two years, the Allweglehen also organizes a maypole erection.
FESTSPIELE SALZBURG
(July to August 2025, more exact dates to follow)
Culture & music have been promoted in Salzburg ever since. When "Jedermann" founded the first festival in the 1920s, Salzburg became increasingly well- known. Since then, numerous visitors have been drawn to Mozart´s birthplace every year to experience the festival.
BERGFEST DES SALZBERGWERKES BERCHTESGADEN
(Whit Monday, June 9, 2025)
This festival has existed for more than 500 years & is all about the alpine salt from the depths of the Berchtesgaden salt mine. The miner´s band & the miners set off from the Schlossplatz with a procession through the Berchtesgaden market.
TRACHTEN- & SCHÜTZENJAHRTAG
(July 2025)
Every year on the first sunday in july, the Trachten- & Schützenjahrtag takes place in the market town of Berchtesgaden. Many traditional costume & shooting clubs in & around Berchtesgaden take part. First, a church service is celebrated together in the collegiate church. This is followed by a parade through the entire market. Anyone who appreciates customs & tradition should not miss this spectacle!
CHRISTKINDL SCHIESSEN
(December 17-24, 2024)
The Christkindl "shooting" always begins a week before christmas eve & was originally a pagan noise custom. Nowadays, however, the Christkindl anschießen is considered a kind of welcome. The specatcle start every day this week at 3 p.m. when the church towers in Berchtesgaden ring out. For many locals, this is a symbol of the pre- christmas period.
